E<\/span>DGAR SOBER\u00d3N was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba in 1962. His family traveled to Madrid, Spain in 1971 and later settled permanently in New York City. In 1983 Sober\u00f3n was awarded a scholarship to study at Parsons School of Design in New York.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 1987 he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree graduating at the top of his class. As a student, Sober\u00f3n was also awarded the Brunschwig and Fils Scholarship to travel abroad. In 1986 he studied at Parsons and the American College in Paris, France and Sienna, Italy. It was soon after his studies abroad that Sober\u00f3n would decide that he would pursue painting and printmaking on a full time basis.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sober\u00f3n had his first solo exhibition in 1998 at the Associated American Artists gallery in New York City. He has participated in numerous exhibitions since, including two important still life survey exhibitions: Silent Things Secret Things, Still Life from Rembrandt to the Millennium, Albuquerque Museum of Art, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Reflections of Time and Place: Latin American Still Life in The 20th Century, Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, N.Y. and El Barrio Museum, New York, N.Y.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In 2004 Sober\u00f3n’s prints became part of the collection of the Rutgers Archives for printmaking. His prints were on display at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum of Art, New Brunswick, N.J. as part of the exhibition, Newer Genres: Twenty Years of the Rutgers Archives for Printmaking Studios. In 2004, his prints were also acquired by the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division, in Washington, DC. More recently, Sober\u00f3n prints were selected for exhibition in the Harnett Biennial of American Prints, his work is now part of the print collection at the Harnett Museum of Art, University of Richmond Museums, Richmond, VA.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the fall of 2009, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, AL opened a retrospective exhibition that brought together a selection of 43 paintings and works on paper spanning more than a decade. Movements in Stillness: The Still life paintings of Edgar Sober\u00f3n, was the artists first solo museum exhibition. An exhibition catalog with the essay, \u201cThe Hermetic Universe of Objects\u201d, by professor and historian, Edward J. Sullivan of New York University was published by the museum.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sober\u00f3n joined the faculty at Parsons School of Design in 1992, where he served as Drawing and Printmaking instructor with the Foundation and Fine Arts programs until 2002. In 1996 the New School University and Parsons School of Design recognized Sober\u00f3n with the distinguished, Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding contributions in art education. In 2002, after a year on sabbatical from his post at Parsons, Sober\u00f3n relocated his studio to central Mexico. He presently lives and works in the town of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n
